Die Puppe

Dir. Ernst Lubitsch (1919).
This early Lubitsch comedy is The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’s benign twin. A blatantly theatrical artifice, released in Germany the same year, it stars the charming Ossi Oswalda as a mechanical doll and then a girl pretending to be the doll. The movie was withheld from US distribution for year, due to its anti-clerical humor.
