Trumpeter David Weiss once wrote a piece for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, so why not pen a suite for all the rest of us banished from the warmth of the health care system? Concerned with social politics (“It’s a strange time right now,” he offers), the premiere of his new work, “The Public Option,” is sure to pack a punch, as is his longstanding little big band, which invariably milks the rich voicings and acute surges that have become the boss’s signature moves. The best part is that from saxophonist Marcus Strickland to drummer Nasheet Waits, the crew plays the bejesus out of Weiss’s terrific book. Take that, teabaggers.
