Non-Tiger-Woods Sports Offense News: Serena Fined, BYU QB Clarifies Abuse Targets

Tiger Woods is not the only athlete whose unfortunate behavior is in the news today. Serena Williams has received her penalty from the Grand Slam administration for threatening to shove her balls down a line judge’s throat at her September U.S. Open debacle: an $82,000 fine, and probation through 2011. Williams, winner of 2,107 championships, is expected to console herself with an exfoliating rub of thousand-dollar bills.

Meanwhile Brigham Young University quarterback Max Hall is apologizing, or rather “apologizing”, for the comments with which he celebrated the Cougars’ overtime victory over Utah Saturday. “I don’t like Utah. In fact, I hate them,” said Hall after the game. ” I hate their program, their fans. I hate everything.”

In his statement, Hall catalogued the abuse his family had received during last year’s BYU-Utah game at Rice-Eccles Stadium: “My family was spit on, had beer dumped on them and were physically assaulted on several occasions. They had to endure extremely vile comments personally attacking my wife, my mother, other family members and our religion.” (This last, presumably, by the University of Utah’s small but contentious cadre of Quaker students.) “They had to be escorted to their car by local police.” Nonetheless, though in his rage he said “I think the whole university, their fans, and their organization is classless,” he now characterizes his comments are “not intended to be directed at the entire organization and all of their fans,” which seems more like a clarification of his abuse than an apology.

Fans from the University of Utah and BYU continue the discussion online. The Salt Lake City Tribune refers to this as a “Holy War,” and it is refreshingly free of swears. (If you hate BYU, this may bring you some pleasure.)

And oh yeah, Tiger Woods: The latest is “Tiger Woods Stormed Out Before Crash And Told Wife That She Ruined Thanksgiving.” Also asked wife is she was “happy now.” Bookies have weighed in: “Paddy Power is offering 13/8 that Tiger will not win a Major title in 2010 and odds on Tiger winning all four majors has lengthened from 20/1 to 28/1.” No wonder Christine Daniels killed herself.
