Long Island has a growing vegan scene, as is evidenced by several restaurants serving vegetarian, non-dairy options, such as vegan pizza at Three Brothers Pizzeria, “un-cheesecake” at the Moo-Cluck bakery, and mock-crab cakes made with tofu and served with dairy-free tartar sauce at Tula Kitchen.

Two-thirds of the store-bought chickens recently tested for salmonella and/or campylobacter, the leading bacterial causes of food-borne illness, came up positive for the pathogens. The cleanest birds were organic, and the most contaminated came from Tyson and Foster Farms.

The latest state to go smoke-free in bars and restaurants is Virginia. Patrons will still be permitted to smoke on outdoor patios. Restaurants located on the premises of tobacco manufacturers, as well as private clubs, are exempt from the law.

The priciest foods in the world include, of course, caviar, saffron, white truffles, and macadamia nuts, but also Tieguanyin oolong tea at $3,000 per kilo, Kopi Luwak coffee, which has been pre-digested by Asian Pam Civets, and moose milk cheese at $500 per pound.
