Under the Toque: Alex Urena Heads to Philly; Gordon Ramsay Backs out of London

Gordon Ramsay has had to pull out of Gordon Ramsay at the London NYC Hotel. The London NYC has taken over as owner and manager of the restaurant, which will retain the Ramsay name.

Alex Urena, who opened two restaurants, both of which have now closed — Urena and Pamplona — is relocating to Philadelphia, where he will be the chef de cuisine at the soon-to-open small plates spot R2L.

Todd English will design a European-style food hall in the lower level of the Plaza Hotel next spring. The space will feature wood-grilled pizzas, burgers and rotisserie foods, seafood and sushi, Asian-style noodles and soups, a wine bar, and coffee bar.

Joe Dobias of JoeDoe talked expansion: “I want to have a diverse portfolio to make money as opposed to having multiple restaurants of the same quality and same nature, like Union Square Hospitality Group. We’ve been talking about doing a sandwich shop recently.”
