Guayoyo Brings Arepas to First Avenue


Late last month, Fork in the Road noticed signs of life at the former Ishikura Sushi space on East 4th Street and First Avenue: A literal sign promised that “Guayoyo is coming soon.” As we suspected, the restaurant is Venezuelan, and the menu now on display in its window includes 14 different kinds of arepas with fillings such as pernil (pork shoulder), chopped octopus salad, ham and cheese, and shredded beef, all for $4 to $7. The menu also includes empanadas and entrees such as costillas de res (braised short ribs) and pollo estofado (Venezuelan-style chicken stew). Given the restaurant’s proximity to Caracas Arepas Bar three blocks north, there may be a Battle of the Dishes in the near future. Pictures of the menu after the jump.
