On the recent A Single Sky, the trumpeter lets it rip in front of a big band, and his proclamation on “Blockbuster” reminds just how wily a soloist he can be. Displaying a mischievous side, he bobs and weaves, changing attacks as need be. Guiding his longstanding quintet, those same skills emerge, but the group dynamics are much more agile. Each member—Caine, McCaslin, Genus, Penn—is shrewd, and their combined force usually gives the very mercurial music the kind of oomph every small group should envy.
