What a relief — the 2009 movie awards are rolling out, drawing our attention away from tedious realities and toward tinsel dreams of Oscar Night. The New York Film Critics Circle has just stepped up with The Hurt Locker for Best Picture and Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow); George Clooney (Up in the Air, Fantastic Mr. Fox) and Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia), Best Actor and Actress; Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) and Mo’Nique (Precious), Best Supporting Actor and Actress; In the Loop, Best Screenplay, Summer Hours, Best Foreign Film, etc.
And Voice alum Andrew Sarris is getting a special award, God bless him…
The LA Film Critics also laureled The Hurt Locker, Summer Hours, Bigelow, Waltz, and Mo’Nique. Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) and Yolande Moreau (Seraphine) were Best Actor and Actress. The LA Critics give runner-ups, which gave Up in the Air and In the Loop some more kudos.
See also the Boston Society of Film Critics, the Washington Area Film Critics Association, AFI’s Top 10, Southeastern Film Critics Awards, Broadcast Film Critics Association’s Critic Choice Nominees, etc, and go play with the Awards Whisperer. Oscar nominations are announced February 2nd. Have fun!
