Word of Mouth: Online Media and The Future of Food Writing
Housing Works Used Bookstore Cafe
January 7

Housing Works is known for its intimate concerts and eclectic selection of used books — the proceeds of which all go to homeless New Yorkers living with HIV. But it was only a matter of time until it jumped on the foodie bandwagon. Its new “Word of Mouth” foodie lit series will feature the likes of Julie Powell, Amanda Hesser, Merrill Stubbs, Ed Levine, Cathy Erway, and moderator Lynn Andriani in a conversation about culinary writing for the web.

The New York Times 9th Annual Arts & Leisure Weekend
The Times Center
January 9

Top Chef stars Padma Lakshmi and Gail Simmons, as well as Le Bernardin’s Eric Ripert are scheduled to appear at the Arts & Leisure Weekend for a panel discussion led by former Times food critic Frank Bruni. The annual four-day event features TimesTalks interviews between Times journalists and celebrated guests from the worlds of film, media, music, television, theater, and food.

MasterChef Casting Call
Sur La Table, Manhasset
January 10

Fox is coming to New York this month as part of a casting tour for Gordon Ramsay’s new show, the U.S. version of the U.K.’s MasterChef. Something of an American Idol of cooking shows, it features real people — not professionally trained chefs — competing for the Master Chef title. The first casting call is in Manhasset and a second will be held in Manhattan. So, if you think you’ve got the culinary chops (and can endure what will surely be a barrage of obscenities from Ramsay), audition away.
