More than a year ago, curators at Last Rites Gallery asked artists to think outside the box and create a piece of work that was unlike their natural aesthetic. The assignment: Go dark. The result was an extensive group show with diverse artists that would normally never show together, and displayed intense and shocking images such as an illustration of a vagina with monster teeth, a punctured neck with blood oozing into a wine glass, and a woman bathing with bears. Twisted, we know. Which, of course, is why Last Rites is doing it again with Dark Pop 2.0. Artists showing their darker side include AIKO, Esao Andrews, Aya Kakeda, Dennis McNett, and Tara McPherson, among others. You might need your inhaler. Opening reception Saturday, January 9, at 7.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7 p.m. Starts: Jan. 9. Continues through Jan. 31, 2010
