Waiting for Highway Rider, his second collabo with Jon Brion, to drop? You’re not alone. In the meantime, you can absorb the sublime sobriety of his solo piano work. Mehldau brings a carte blanche attitude to his romantic side; when working alone, it’s allowed to lead him wherever the rapture is hiding. But the animated dazzle of some excursions (“Trailer Park Ghost” comes to mind), assures that mere rumination never gets the best of him. Call it a chops-over-mood triumph. Show proceeds go to JazzReach.
