For all the bands that cite Dinosaur Jr. as an influence, none can match frontman J. Mascis’s sheer guitar virtuosity—an idea that might well be anathema in indie rock—or his cynical apathy (save maybe Pavement, but only for the latter point). Their latest album, Farm, and second since the trio’s original members reunited in 2005, only reaffirms this with Mascis’s spiraling guitar solos and trippy, near-narcoleptic drawl. Live is still the best way to experience this seeming marriage of opposites, since there’s something about the way Mascis’s incredibly loud amplifier stacks meet his soft-spoken vocals that has to be seen to be believed.
