They Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail

Dir. Akira Kurosawa (1945).
This highly regarded Kabuki drama was redesigned by Kurosawa as a vehicle for Kenichi Enomoto, one of the most popular comedians of the day, whose antics as a down-to-earth porter provide subversive humorous relief to the story about warring noble brothers during the 12th century. The picture was banned by the Japanese military government as too democratic, then was later banned by American army authorities as too feudal—it wasn’t released until 1952.
