The Mummy’s Hand

Dir. Christy Cabanne (1940)
In 1932 Universal released The Mummy, an exceptionally well-made classic horror film. In the early 1940s, the studio returned to the formula with a less poetic new series consisting of four breezy B-picture cheapo mummy monster movies, the best of which was this one, directed by the veteran Cabanne whose career went back to the early days of the silents. It features rugged cowboy star Tom Tyler as the murderous 3,000-year-old mummy and slickly mixes chills with equal parts comedy and romance, tailor-made for the kiddie matinee trade. If the temple bears Incan iconography instead of Egyptian, it’s beause the hand-me-down set was originally built for the 1940 South American jungle adventure flick Green Hell.
