The trumpeter’s new Men of Honor disc exemplifies the kind of muscle found in the jazz mainstream these days. From drummer Gerald Cleaver to bassist Dwayne Burno, the players all lean forward—their aggression marks the music, even when dreaminess is in the air. The elastic designs of Miles’ ’60s quintet also bubble up here, but it’s easy to accept such echoes as expected toe-holds. When the group interaction is this sharp, fretting about forebears seems fruitless.
