MURDER, SHE WROTE

In 1899, Susan Glaspell, who would later cofound the Provincetown Players, worked for a Des Moines newspaper. She filed a score of stories about a farmer’s wife who was accused of murdering her husband while he slept. In 1916, she distilled that reportage into Trifles, a one-act play in which two women, who visit the homestead after the murder, discover a bevy of clues that their husbands discount and ignore. The Theatre of a Two-Headed Calf, an experimental theater company long concerned with questions of female opportunity and agency, revives this homicidal chestnut. Under Brooke O’Harra’s direction, enlivened by Brendan Connelly’s score, this is a show not to be trifled with.
