Is a 40th anniversary return to their longtime stomping grounds reason enough to check out an unabashed fusion quartet currently leaning more toward classical than international sources? Perhaps. Guitarist Ralph Towner—who cofounded the group with reedsman Paul McCandless and bassist Glen Moore (drummer Mark Walker came along in 1987)—sounds positively revitalized on his recent duo album with trumpeter Paolo Fresu. And String Cheese Incident fans who heard McCandless during his sit-ins with the jammers would do well to check out the real deal.
