Having gotten MySpace and Facebook to remove 3,533 members with a record of sexual predation in 2009, attorney general Andrew Cuomo has facilitated another sweep of other social networking sites and gotten 803 other registered sex offenders removed from their buddy lists. The newly-scrubbed sites are Tagged (with whom Cuomo has had dealings before), MyLife, hi5, BlackPlanet, Bebo, Flixster, Flickr, Friendster, eSpin, Orkut, Stickam, Buzznet, and Fotolog. He now calls on several sites catering to young users — such as Build-a-Bearville and BarbieGirls — to follow their lead.
The offenders were identified via the state’s e-STOP program, and their info offered to social networking sites in furtherance of their removal. The 806 blacklisted users had been using 6,336 separate online identities prior to their removal.
The AG’s release informs us that the New York county from which most of the sex offenders were removed is Kings — that is, Brooklyn — which 225 of them call home.
