Ever since their debut on Tzadik, John Zorn’s label, this coed collective set a high bar for their thorny modern classical mèlange. They bewitch with jazzy piano and trumpet, Ennio Morricone–like spaghetti-knotted guitars, avant violins, and dour, whispery male/female vocals that brood and wax poetic—that is, until the strike of heavy metallic riffs breaks through the fog.
