NBC Chef at Center of Black History Month Menu Outrage Doesn’t See What All the Fuss Is About


Less than 24 hours after her Black History Month menu sparked Twitter controversy, NBC’s cafeteria chef, who, by the way, is African-American, says she doesn’t understand why everyone got so hot and bothered.

Leslie Calhoun, whose Black History Month menu featured collard greens, fried chicken, and black-eyed peas, found herself the unwitting target of righteous outrage after Questlove posted a shot of the menu on his Twitter page. As the Post reports, Calhoun, who’s worked at NBC for eight years and has long wanted to do a special Black History Month menu, was surprised that NBC employees decided it was racist, after, of course, asking black people dining in the cafeteria if it was racist, which, Calhoun said, “they said…it wasn’t.”

Although an NBC spokesman issued an apology, Calhoun remains admirably steadfast in her belief that her menu was no big deal. “I don’t understand it at all,” she told the Post of the controversy. “It’s what I eat.”
