Skittish yet graceful, the cagey composer’s music for tuba, guitar, bass, percussion, and reeds can feel unsettled. But the whirl of perpetual motion, and the ominous tone it sometimes engenders, is purposeful. It gives the saxophonist’s zig-zagging alto lines a chance to demonstrate the drama they’re so fond of. Last year’s This Brings Us To, Volume 1 was cheered by crits, and rightfully so. There’s nothing like it being created these days.
