Joel Harrison’s String Choir

by

The guitarist thinks like a designer, so his string-centric pieces provide plenty of revealing vistas. Listening to his electric filigree weave through the charts written for violin, viola, and cello on Motian’s “Cathedral Song” is both soothing and stimulating—an approach that casts the revered drummer as an overlooked composer. Harrison’s arrangements stress the music’s luminescence while blending impromptu episodes with scripted passages.
