If you must appetize, azifa–a mustard-laced lentil salad–is not a bad idea.
This week Counter Culture camels in to Red Sea 47, newest addition to the city’s collection of a dozen or so Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurants. The vegetarian special is particularly tasty and cheap, and so is the national dish of doro watt–chicken and boiled egg in a thick red slurry of spices. The catalog of flesh-bearing dishes includes, clockwise from the upper lefthand corner: kitfo (raw beef with spiced butter), menchet abesh (ground beef sauteed with spices and deglazed with red wine), derek tibs (steak tips sauteed with onions), and doro watt (chicken and boiled egg in a thick spicy gravy).
Though it doesn’t seem particularly Ethiopian, the grilled tilapia is good, and a good deal.
