Glenn Branca’s 1981 album The Ascension was a landmark moment for minimalism, rock, and minimalist rock. Four guitarists hammering away at power chords and microtones for 13 mind-melting minutes at time, a hypnotic churn that was at once glorious and uneasy. Tonight is the record release party for 29-years-later follow-up, The Ascension: The Sequel, which he’ll be playing in its entirety. It’s not The Godfather II or anything, but still has the same can’t-lose heft, brawn, and headbanging-into-nirvana monstro-riffs of classic Branca. With a slideshow by artist Robert Longo.
