The new Mwaliko is a “special guest” duets disc that’s sharp but glib, disjointed and shiny. Back on the bandstand, the nimble African guitarist with the almost compulsive need to improvise remains a jaw-dropper when it comes to squeezing his rhythm section for ingenious responses. Together, they’re a resourceful lot; a three-note guitar run bounces off a well-placed bass bump while a cymbal sizzles—in a flash it feels like all hell is breaking loose. Yep, they often deal in the unexpected, and therefore they often leave their audiences astonished.
