Brooklyn space-rock quintet Mon Khmer play echoey, loopy psych-rock exercises with lyrics in (gasp!) English, not the Southeast Asian language that inspired their name. The only real exotic indulgences in their music show up in the polyrhythmic jams late in each song. Not that Mon Khmer’s fidgety indie-rock side isn’t likeable—the slide guitars and clever percussion they texture each song with actually give a lot of depth to their songs, which ironically(?) often seem to deal lyrically in self-control.
