Here’s further evidence that neighborhood gentrification can be measured in cappuccino foam: The industrial wilds of Bushwick are now home to another cafe, this one called Little Skips. Located in a former carburetor shop at the intersection of Myrtle and Willoughby Avenues, it’s the work of two 20-somethingish entrepreneurs who are relatively new arrivals to the neighborhood.
Bushwick BK reports that the shop, which bears the requisite tin ceilings and exposed brick walls and is decorated with estate-sale finds, is now serving Counter Culture coffee, sandwiches, and Ceci-Cela pastries. One of the owners, whose family is Cambodian, has concocted a sandwich she’s calling “the anti-banh mi,” and is also brewing her own tea. And even if the food isn’t necessarily locavorish, the hiring practices are: Co-owner Linda Thach told Bushwick BK that they’ve “had a few applications from people who live in like midtown…. But we want to keep it local. Some of these people don’t even know where Bushwick is.”
