Voice Choices

Cassandra Wilson

by

Sometimes that smoky hush has a bit too much languor in it, and her potent sensuality becomes muted. But in the large, especially when the tempos are nudging her along, Wilson’s voice is that of a backroads siren, able to lead you to places you haven’t been in a long time. When the material’s right, as it was for most of 2008’s Loverly, her very disarming informality makes it seem like she’s nuzzling your ear.
