Dir. Victor Fleming (1938).
Exemplifying the MGM house style, this vintage hokum has everything—romance, adventure, comedy, pathos, and even a bit of patriotic bushwah—in one starry package. Clark Gable is the dashing flyboy, Spencer Tracy plays his gruff mechanic, and Myrna Loy is the grooviest Kansas farm girl in whose front yard you might ever park your plane. Fleming doesn’t supply much directorial personality; for that, see Howard Hawks’ Only Angels Have Wings.
