Construction worker Mbarek Lafrem, 30, of Pennsylvania, has been charged with assault and attempted sexual assault in a Thursday morning attack in a women’s bathroom at Social Bar which left a Connecticut nurse with a fractured skull, a broken eye socket and a broken nose. According to friends, she said no when he asked her to dance. According to the Post, she was already dancing with someone else.
Lafrem, according to police, followed the woman to a second-floor bathroom, kicked open the stall she was using, and beat her. She was found on the floor with her pants unbuttoned. Per the Post, a rape kit came back negative. She’s at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she’s recovering from her injuries and reconstructive surgery on Thursday.
Lafrem was caught on surveillance footage leaving the bar, his hand apparently hurt, and again at a nearby bodega, where he allegedly shoplifted a beer. After the photos were released, two of his fellow construction workers notified police that he was staying at a nearby motel.
The News says Lafrem
“made statements implicating himself” during questioning by detectives with the Special Victims Squad in East Harlem
The Post is going with “sources,” and says he admits the battery but not the attempted rape.
The News says neighbors didn’t expect anything like this. The Post found a neighbor and former landlady who don’t think much of him.
If you have to pick one, I suggest the News, for the truly creepy picture of the suspect grinning at reporters.
