Does Instapundit Owe James Clyburn an Apology?

Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit, the most prominent libertarian tenured public school professor on the Arpanet, thinks an apology might be in order from House Majority Whip James Clyburn, one of the african-american lawmakers who reported being called a “nigger” by protesters in Washington yesterday

DOES CLYBURN OWE TEA PARTY PROTESTERS AN APOLOGY? The bogus racism card has been played so often that I no longer find such charges very credible.

re: Clyburn Fuming Over ‘Shocking,’ Allegedly Racial Comments of Tea-Party Protesters [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

Clyburn owes those protesters some more specific allegations. I spent a few hours with them today and saw a very different picture. There are nuts and racists in a lot of crowds, but the signs and their conversations and their chants today have largely (actually, I saw zero racism and exactly one “long form” birth certificate sign) covered these things up extremely well if Clyburn has their number.

Well, thanks to the mighty self-correcting power of the Internets, I can report that the answer to the good professor’s question is no. James Clyburn does not owe Tea Partiers an apology.

Who says? Well, that would be Kathryn Jean Lopez of the Corner, who updated her original post with a link to Talking Points Memo’s reporting of the incidents, and said that the behavior of the protesters was

…shameful, uncivil, and wrong. And in my experience there unrepresentative.

For the record, John Boehner (“reprehensible”), Michael Steele (“idiots out there saying stupid things” that “[w]e don’t support”), and Amy Kremer, coordinator of the Tea Party Express (“It’s disgraceful and the people in this movement won’t tolerate it because that’s not what we’re about”) are all with Lopez on that.
