Now that Ms. Bigelow has made history by becoming the first woman to cop a Best Director Oscar for Hurt Locker, it behooves us to reexamine her earlier work. This is a good place to start—a thunderous thriller, a dark vision of the near future, set in L.A.—it’s a head trip and a half. The script is by James Cameron, the director’s ex-spouse. One critic who hated it said: “The film foams at the mouth with ideas.” Well, what’s wrong with that?
