Dir. F.W. Murnau (1927).
One of the greatest American silent films, this is also, in terms of design, atmosphere and audacious visuals, the most Germanic movie made in Hollywood. In his American debut, Murnau takes a simple, universal story, about a young farm couple whose marriage is ideal until a temptress from the city snares the man, and gives it tremendous emotional impact through extraordinarily imaginative camera work.
