Nicky’s began serving banh mi on East 2nd Street in 2004, about five years before it became fashionable to add pickled daikon, carrots, and cilantro to anything on bread. But they may not be doing so for much longer.
EV Grieve reports that Nicky’s now displays a “for rent” sign, and according to a member of the Dang family, who owns the restaurant, the store may not stay open; they’ll know more “in the next month or two.”
The Dangs do have another location of Nicky’s in Boerum Hill, and are now working on a new storefront at Nassau and Ann Streets in the Financial District. That neighborhood is already home to an outpost of Baoguette, so one can only imagine the opportunities for a brand-new banh mi skirmish, though it will hopefully be unburdened by any unfortunate Vietnam War allusions.
