Sometimes Yahel’s organ antics are so amazing, his piano lyricism gets overlooked. The arrival of Hometown cures that. Whether his trio is rocking a beehive vibe on Monk’s “Think of One” or getting Middle Eastern groovy on Ellington’s “Blue Pepper,” the impact of the leader’s yen for melody abounds. Occasional Jarrett-izing aside, here’s a group that strives for singularity and fulfills on the promise of messing with everything in sight.
