Japanese psych-rock emperors Acid Mothers Temple are playing tonight at the Knitting Factory. But “psych-rock” is not a term to be taken lightly here — the band’s latest effort destroys the beautiful Terry Riley piano orchestration In C and instead erects a mass of writhing organ and continuous drum blasts that’d make Animal from the Muppets proud. Meanwhile, lovelorn lo-fier Best Coast is playing her second show of the week at the Mercury Lounge, as are Woods/Vivian Girls collaboration the Babies at Death by Audio. Joining the latter are So Cow and impassioned lounge-organ balladeers the Surprisers. Finally, Midlake, a band of classic-rock revivalists and Stevie Nicks enthusiasts, mellow out at the Bowery Ballroom.
