Benefits, perhaps, of being a huge celebrity way before you even get around to rapping–utter command of that world-weary, lightly cynical, alone-in-a-crowd type of creative voice. Drake has a lot of strengths but this is among the best of them, how self-reflective and borderline angst-ridden he is about his fame and success, even as his debut is still a couple months away. “Over” is a pretty lonely song; the video, which lands Drake alone in his bedroom for most of it, plays that fact up. It’s like he’s in a hurry to hate the thing toward which he’s even now rushing. So yeah: meta, but real relatable too.
