The Hoodlum

Dir. Sidney Franklin (1919).
Mary Pickford stars in this charming romantic comedy in which she plays the sort of high-spirited but innocent character at which she excelled. Here, she’s a snobbish rich girl who leaves her wealthy grandfather’s 5th Avenue mansion to live in a slum with her sociologist father where she’s transformed by life in the poor quarter. The superb New York slum sets were done in Hollywood by Max Parker, one of the great production designers. Live musical accompaniment by Bernie Anderson.
