I can vividly remember a time when every male who auditioned for a musical automatically sang “Corner of the Sky” from Pippin and every female, as if by law, belted “Meadowlark” from The Baker’s Wife.
There was no other way to go.
In fact, if I recall correctly, anyone who auditioned without one of those songs could be locked up and thrown into a detention center for the criminally insane, a place where no showtunes or Fosse hands were ever allowed.
But that was then.
Is there anyone on the audition circuit who can tell me what the de rigueur tryout tunes are these days?
I’m guessing “Love Sneaks In” or “Run, Freedom, Run!” for the boys and “Defying Gravity” or “Mama Who Bore Me” for girls.
Did I pass?
