Fans of Ralph Peterson’s Triangular will recall just how much pianist Allen enjoys sparring with an aggressive drummer. Her sage blend of pretty and prickly always carries more oomph when the rhythmic stakes are raised. That means this week’s romp with Jeff Watts in the thumper’s seat should bring overt muscle to her sometimes dreamy solos. The new Flying Toward the Sound recital is a great glimpse at how her dreams can contain their own brand of rigor.
