The Red Hook Ball Fields food vendors kick off their much-anticipated season on May 1, but in the near future, some of them may find a more permanent home in the neighborhood.
NYC Food Guy reports that Cesar Fuentes, the Executive Director of the Food Vendors Committee of Red Hook Park, is planning to open an open-air market called Red Hook Mercado on Van Brunt Street, Red Hook’s main thoroughfare.
Although Fuentes intends the market to serve as an artistic and community hub for the neighborhood, he’s planning to reserve space for at least one of the Ball Fields’ food vendors — speculation is that it will go to Rafael Soler, the proprietor of Soler Dominican and also Fuentes’ stepfather. Soler is already slated to sell his pupusas at Central Park Summer Stage this season, so the possibility of an additional outpost doesn’t seem that far-fetched.
If the market is a success, Fuentes plans to make food available both weekdays and weekends throughout the year. Further details will undoubtedly unfold as the season does.
