If there’s anything better than happy hour, it’s two happy hours. The sandwich board outside The Speakeasy in Clinton Hill promises to double your pleasure (and, perhaps, tomorrow’s pain) with two separate happy hours, the first from 4-7 p.m. and a bonus round between 10-11 p.m. The sandwich board brings more good news: well drinks are $5, draft beer is $3, wine is $4, and “special” martinis are $5, although a perfectly ordinary martini can be ordered, too.
On a recent night, the sliding mirrors that hide the large flat-screen TV during a busy dinner service were flung open to reveal an episode of Law & Order: SVU. The waitress, an unusual package of looker and sweetheart, was cast as one of the jurors. Neighborhood regulars — older gentlemen in leisure suits and fedoras, young women in tight jeans and bangles — sipped their glasses of beer and cheap sparkling wine as they waited for a glimpse of their server during the onscreen verdict. Soon after their girl’s 15th-of-a-second of fame was up, the channel was switched back to basketball.
