The rather sage saxophonist has a piece called “In or Out” that plops him at a fork in the road. But instead of feeling flummoxed, he turns his anxiety into grace. That kind of cagey problem-solving defined Flag Day, a 2008 affair that was a recent high point of New York jazz. From bouncy Monk to weepy Neil Young, Kolker brings plenty of emotion to his somewhat minimalistic material.
