He Who Laughs Laughs While Others Exercise

Today is the day in which a whole lot of unfortunate health studies got dumped on us. Scientists must be pissed or something. Because it’s not like any of this is news so much as it’s just a nagging reminder of how we have too much fun in life and better rein it in, ’cause we’re gonna die… which rather begs the question of what life is for, anyway.

In synopses:

  • Women, meet lung cancer.
  • Smoking, drinking, lack of exercise, and a no-veggie diet will age you 12 years faster than your annoying teetotaler friends who are always going on about Zumba.
  • Half of Americans have a number of ailments ranging from diabetes to high blood pressure to high cholesterol to bursitis. And heart problems.
  • Chocolate and the Internet might make us depressed, but take them away and we’re even more depressed, assholes! Because we are all addicts.
  • The sun used to be our friend, but now it hates us because, frankly, we live too long. Except now, we’re all gonna die.

The light at the end of this tunnel of horrors, though, is the information that scientists have hidden away so that we continue to suffer in our punishing webs of gloom and doom. And that is laughing! LOLZ. It makes you healthy! It’s exercise!

Dr. Lee S. Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan have have found that laughter has a positive effect on modulating components of the immune system, including increased production of antibodies and activation of the body’s protective cells, including T-cells and especially Natural Killer cells’ killing activity of tumor cells. Repetitious “mirthful laughter,” which they call Laughercise©, causes the body to respond in a way similar to moderate physical exercise. Laughercise© enhances your mood, decreases stress hormones, enhances immune activity, lowers bad cholesterol and systolic blood pressure, and raises good cholesterol (HDL).

Hahahahaha scientists! I’m totally Laughercising right now! And drinking red wine! (Um, not really. Ha?)
