Newsweek recently ran a misguided article contending that most gay actors can’t convincingly play straight and should avoid trying to do so.
Meanwhile, the writer argues that straight actors are generally quite good at playing gays, so that’s a far superior proposition!
This utter hogwash (by a gay writer, yet) was self-loathing, factually erroneous, and deeply damaging to the cause of talented actors who want to be able to come out of the closet while keeping their palette of possible career choices as wide and interesting as possible.
And now Sean Hayes‘ Promises, Promises costar Kristin Chenoweth has stepped up to the plate and written a tough, powerful, and in fact brilliant letter to the magazine which defends Hayes’ abilities while striking a blow against locker-room-stye prejudices and assumptions everywhere.
Thank you, Kristin!
Forever and ever, you’ll stay in my heart and I will love you…
