Carlos Varela

It’s a hopeful sign of improving Cuban-American relations that this star of the island’s Revolution-approved nueva trova (new song) movement is touring here at all. Varela’s 2009 album No Es El Fin (It’s Not the End) was relatively mellow for a singer whose Cubanism is more apparent in his lyrics than in his Westernized music. But I doubt he’ll get away without reprising controversial hits such as “Guillermo Tell,” which demanded a dialogue between old and new Cuba.
