First Photo of BP Oil Spill Released (And Now Video)

BP has released the first photo of the oil leak in the Gulf, and, well, does this look like something that, in the words of Rush Limbaugh, is as “natural as ocean water,” and going to just get better on its own?

To recap: The leak has released at least 4 million gallons of oil into the Gulf over the past three weeks, at a rate of about 210,000 gallons a day. 55% of people consider it a major environmental disaster, and Limbaugh considers it an inside job by environmentalists.

After the photo came this 30-second clip on YouTube:

Nasty, eh?

“Plan E,” the “junk shot,” in which a bunch of old crap is shot at the hole in an attempt to clog it, will be attempted this weekend. In the meantime, tar balls are washing up on the beaches. But who needs those beaches anyway?

It’s also come out via the Huffington Post and NYTPicker that the New York Times’ recent story, “The Gulf Oil Spill Is Bad, but How Bad?” quoted “environmental experts” who were actually affiliated with the oil industry saying “the sky isn’t falling” or anything. Well, because it’s not the sky, guys. That’ll come next.

But, you do have to question people downplaying what is clearly going to be a situation with extensive ramifications, no matter how you look at it. Presuming we understand the environment at all, or even that we know we don’t, why try to say this isn’t going to have an impact? Unless, of course, you’ve got your hand in the pockets of big oil. Or you’re Rush Limbaugh, because then, well, we all know to expect that kind of nonsense.
