Conspicuously absent from the reunited lineup of the art-rock group that made her famous, Swans, Jarboe was responsible for that group’s best-selling releases, thanks to her gothic songwriting and quasi-theatrical persona. Since then, her music has gotten heavier both lyrically and musically, thanks to a stellar 2003 collaboration with psychedelic metallers Neurosis—and her viewpoint seems, in an odd way, more acerbic. Meanwhile, Swans founder (and Jarboe’s ex-boyfriend) Michael Gira has become more contemplative. In any case, Jarboe usually plays some of her best Swans songs live, so to get the full group’s experience, we recommend attending tonight’s show and the Gira Swans’ October shows. With Hull and Bezoar.
