The jazz guitarist is touring accompanied only by his Orchestrion, a group of instruments—including vibraphones lent by Gary Burton, drums courtesy of Jack DeJohnette, guitarbots created by the League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots, blown bottles, and “other custom-fabricated acoustic mechanical instruments”—set in sound and motion after painstaking composition via guitar-MIDI interface. Metheny interacts on guitar as well, and the results range from the superb (his 15-minute “Orchestrion” is a gizmodic composition of great beauty) to the banal, depending on your appreciation of his breezy melodies and nebulous harmonic movement.
