Travail, Transformation, and Flow was one of 2009’s hippest discs because the canny alto saxophonist found ways to make fragged motifs sound purposeful and precise. Eight instruments, including tuba and vibes, conflate and expand, ballooning back and forth between thick, itchy action and curt, piercing solos. Lehman’s program is head-spinning stuff, milking all the positives from polyphony and syncopation, and making his GZA cover seem almost tame in comparison. His crew doesn’t play often enough.
